THE CHALLENGE

Understanding the context before acting.

Klein Tools ANZ engaged Orka Advisory to establish a practical and scalable foundation for collecting, managing and calculating greenhouse gas emissions data.

As Klein Tools progressed its ESG and climate journey, the organisation recognised the need to move from emissions data held across different internal teams, systems and external providers towards a centralised and repeatable process. The business also wanted to ensure that the methodology and data structures established from the outset could support future ESG reporting, customer information requests and emerging climate disclosure expectations.

Orka Advisory developed a structured framework covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and priority Scope 3 emissions sources, including electricity, fleet, freight, logistics and business travel. The engagement combined customised templates, methodological guidance, data review and internal capability building, enabling Klein Tools to retain ownership of its emissions data and manage the process internally.

ACTION
WHAT ORKA DID

From challenge to practical action.

The engagement was structured around the workstreams required to address the client's specific context, priorities and objectives.

01

Emissions Boundary and Scope Definition

  • Defined the organisational and operational boundaries for Scope 1, Scope 2 and priority Scope 3 emissions. Identified relevant emissions sources across electricity consumption, fleet fuel, freight, logistics and business travel.
  • Established the data inputs, level of detail and reporting requirements needed to support consistent emissions calculations.
02

Emissions Data Mapping

  • Mapped internal and external emissions data sources across finance, operations, logistics, utility providers, fuel-card systems, freight partners and travel providers.
  • Developed a customised data-mapping framework identifying where information was held, how it could be accessed and who was responsible for maintaining it.
03

Data Collection Framework and Templates

  • Developed a centralised, Excel-based emissions data collection template for ongoing internal use. Defined consistent data formats, units of measurement, reporting frequencies and collection responsibilities.
  • Provided practical guidance to help internal teams engage with data owners and external suppliers while reducing duplication and unnecessary administrative burden.
04

Emissions Calculation Methodology

  • Established a calculation methodology and framework aligned with recognised greenhouse gas accounting practices. Provided guidance on relevant emissions factors and the conversion of activity data into emissions estimates.
  • Structured the dataset so it could support future calculation, analysis and reporting requirements.
05

Data Review and Gap Assessment

Undertook a high-level review of the compiled activity data to identify gaps, inconsistencies and structural issues. Provided targeted recommendations to improve data completeness, reliability and usability.

06

Internal Capability and Governance

  • Clarified responsibilities between internal data owners and Orka Advisory. Delivered guidance and walkthrough sessions to build internal understanding of emissions categories, data requirements, calculation processes and governance expectations.
  • Supported Klein Tools in developing an internally owned process that could be maintained and strengthened over time.
THE APPROACH

Connected thinking, not isolated deliverables.

Each workstream contributes to the broader objective of helping the organisation move forward with greater clarity, capability and confidence.

OUTCOMES

What changed.

The value of the engagement is reflected in stronger capability, clearer priorities and practical progress for the organisation.

01

Established a structured emissions-data foundation

Klein Tools gained a centralised framework for collecting and organising emissions-related activity data across electricity, fleet, freight, logistics and travel.

02

Improved data consistency and reliability

Clear data requirements, formats, reporting frequencies and ownership responsibilities reduced fragmentation and created a more consistent approach to emissions-data management.

03

Stronger internal capability and ownership

Internal teams were equipped with practical tools, templates and methodological guidance to manage emissions data without creating long-term dependence on external advisers.

04

Calculation-ready emissions dataset

The engagement positioned Klein Tools to progress from activity-data collection towards emissions calculation, analysis and the future development of a credible greenhouse gas inventory.

05

Enhanced ESG and climate reporting readiness

The methodology and data structures provided a scalable foundation for responding to emerging AASB S2 and ISSB-aligned expectations, as well as requests from customers, supply-chain partners and other stakeholders.

06

Better visibility of emissions and operational drivers

The framework improved visibility of energy, fuel, freight and travel data, supporting the future identification of emissions hotspots, operational efficiencies and cost-management opportunities.

07

Reduced risk of future rework

By establishing appropriate emissions boundaries, data structures and governance processes from the outset, Klein Tools was better positioned to expand its emissions measurement and ESG reporting activities as organisational and stakeholder expectations evolve.
